binding: Contemporary full sheep, spine gilt in six compartments, title in gilt on lettering-piece. 
A few light waterstains. Caps worn with lack of leather, and corners worn, upper joint starting to crack but sound.


Rare first edition. Not in Caillet or Dorbon

The autor explain that "the ancient philosophers when speaking of the Philosopher's stone, did not mean the transmutation of the metals, but the fertilization of the soil". (Duveen).
